Pas de la Casa Grandvalira

A brief history of Andorra

Andorra is a small mountain paradise located between Spain and France and, even though it is small, it has a fascinating history. Its origins date back to pre-historic times, but it first began to take shape as an independent nation in the 9th century. For centuries, Andorra was a territory that was disputed by feudal lords and bishops, until the joint sovereignty of the bishop of Urgell and the count of Foix was established in 1278. This system is still in place today, making Andorra a unique type of principality.

Throughout the years, Andorra has grown economically, thanks to commerce and tourism. In 1993, a democratic constitution was drawn up, establishing a parliamentary system. Its impressive snow-covered mountains make it an internationally-renowned ski destination.
