The ski area of Grandvalira in Andorra has been the venue for several top-level sporting events in recent years in the alpine skiing, speed skiing and freestyle skiing categories.
Following the success of the 2012 and 2016 Alpine Skiing World Cups and the 2019 World Cup Finals, the largest resort in Southern Europe is back in action holding the European Cup Finals (from 14 to 20 March 2022), which will be an organizational test before our second World Cup Finals (from 13 to 19 March 2023).
The sporting legacy that has been built has allowed the Principality of Andorra to face the challenge of presenting itself as a candidate to host the 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships.
For the first time in history, Andorra has the guarantees and opportunity to opt for holding one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world.
Discover Andorra's 2027 candidature
This has been the path that has taken us to where we are today:
The Àliga and Avet courses in Soldeu–El Tarter form a compact venue that in recent years has been the epicentre of high-level competitions, such as Europa Cups, Europa Cup Finals, World Cups, and World Cup Finals. The next goal is the 2022 Europa Cup Finals.
AVET COURSE
Avet, in Grandvalira – Soldeu, is the course for technical races.
The giant slalom course has a drop of 416 metres, while the slalom course drops 210 metres.
The course is oriented towards the northeast, which guarantees quality snow. In Soldeu, the arrival area is connected to the town of Soldeu through a 14,000-square-metre skiable platform that offers all necessary comforts and services for the sporting family, professionals involved in events, and spectators.
ÀLIGA COURSE
Speed races are held on the Àliga course, in the El Tarter sector.
The old and the new Àliga courses form an X when seen from above exactly like the one in the Grandvalira logo. The competition area is located in Grandvalira–El Tarter.
With its highest starting point at 2,476 metres, it is 2.7 kilometres long and has a maximum drop in altitude of 751 metres. Skiers can reach speeds in excess of 120 km/h.
The 2022 Europa Cup Finals will strictly follow all the protocols established by the Ministry of Health of the Government of Andorra for the holding of sporting events, as well as all the instructions set by the International Ski Federation.
The organization will adapt all prevention and safety measures to the development of the health situation.
Bid for the World Alpine Skiing World Cup 2027
Andorra is aspiring to host for the first time the most important alpine skiing event in the world.
The Pyrenean country, led by the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE), will soon present its candidacy to the International Ski Federation (FIS) for holding the 2027 World Championships.
Never before have the Pyrenees hosted such an important sporting landmark. The countdown begins for the one-year period in which the Principality will be measured against big names such as Crans-Montana (Switzerland) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany).
The decision will be taken in the town of Vilamoura (Portugal) during the FIS Congress in May 2022 with the vote of the 17 members of the FIS Council, who will determine the host.
