THE COMPETITION

THE COMPETITION

The World Cup is the most important international circuit-based alpine ski competition in the world, along with the Winter Olympics and the Alpine World Ski Championships. The competition is held annually and features a calendar of races for male and female skiers. It is considered the "Formula 1” of winter sports, where every detail counts: from the millimetrically precise preparation of the skis to the meticulous concentration in studying the course.

The road to the FIS Ski World Cup Finals

In 1965, just eight years after the opening the country’s first ski resort at Pas de la Casa - Grau Roig and one year after Soldeu - El Tarter first opened its doors, alpine skiing was declared a "sport of national interest" in Andorra.

The principality was the venue for the first European Cup for alpine skiing, which took place from 6 to 9 March 1974 at Pas de la Casa (slalom and giant slalom at Costa Rodona and slalom on the central slope of Grau Roig). The courses played host once again to the same competition the following year. Some years later, for the 1990-91 season Andorra was chosen to host two women’s slaloms (El Mirador, Grau Roig), and since 2003 the country has formed part of the European Cup circuit. The organizational success of all these events meant the principality was entrusted with hosting the first World Cup in 2012 at the Avet slope, Soldeu. Added to this is the fact that, over the course of its skiing history, Andorra has produced 28 Olympic skiers and has been represented at 10 Winter Olympics, starting with Innsbruck in 1976.

Grandvalira’s skiable area traces its origins back to October 2003, when the management of SAETDE and ENSISA (the companies operating Pas de la Casa - Grau Roig and Soldeu - El Tarter) announced a long-awaited merger. These two Andorran resorts laid the foundations of Grandvalira, and since then the skiable area has developed at an impressive rate. Season after season it has grown not only in size, but also in terms of facilities, equipment, quality, services, attractions and possibilities. Today, it is one of the leading resorts in southern Europe and a leader in the creation of new mountain experiences for visitors to enjoy all year round. With a total of 210 skiable kilometres (1,926 hectares), Grandvalira not only boasts the largest skiable area in the Pyrenees (and the Iberian Peninsula), but is also ranked among the 20 best winter sports centres in Europe.

In 2001, two years before the merger that produced Grandvalira, the decision was made to promote top-level alpine ski competitions. The idea arose once Andorra had completed its preparations as a candidate to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Although the initiative did not get past the planning stage, it served to identify which courses were the most suitable for the different FIS disciplines. Investment plans to improve the Avet course were drawn up and in 2006 the country stood for the first time as a candidate to host the World Cup. Although it would not realize this ambition until 2012, from 2008 onwards Soldeu was used as a venue for various technical races that formed part of the European Cup.

Andorra’s successful hosting of European Cups in previous years meant that in 2012, Grandvalira experienced the thrill of a circuit-based winter sports competition at the highest level when it hosted the first FIS Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup. The success of the 2012 competition, in terms of organization as well as the condition of the courses, led Grandvalira to be chosen once again, this time as the venue for two races of the 2016 FIS Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup. The 2016 edition of the World Cup presented a new organizational challenge, given that it was the first time the event had been held on the Àliga course. Grandvalira’s successful hosting of these different editions of the World Cup gave FIS the confidence to award the resort the Finals of the FIS Men’s and Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup 2019. As a result, in 2019 the courses of Avet and Àliga will spend a week under the spotlight as venues for the World Cup.

COURSES

Avet Slope

The Avet course is where the Slalom and Giant Slalom categories take place, and in 2012 it was chosen to host the races for the Ladies Alpine Ski World Cup. The competition stage takes place in Soldeu, and its classic layout was approved by the International Ski Federation (FIS) in October 2007. For the 2019 Alpine Ski World Cup finals, the finish area has been modified with an incredible skiable platform at the bottom of the Avet course and the town of Soldeu.

The course can be reached via the eight-person Soldeu gondola and the six-person Soldeu ski lift. It faces the north-west, guaranteeing the quality of the snow. You can see the town of Soldeu, where the finishing line is, from the descent and during a large part of the course. This means the entire course is perfectly visible and may even be followed from the windows of the sunniest rooms in the majority of the hotels.

The 2012 World Cup skiers enjoyed the Avet course so much that German skier Maria Hölf-Riesch, World Cup champion for the 2010-11 season, admitted that 'it's the best Giant course on the circuit'.

Àliga Slope

The Àliga slope is where the speed categories take place: Downhill and Super-G.

In 2016, Andorra hosted the World Cup and Alpine Combined races.

The competition stage takes place in the El Tarter sector, and its trail are approved by the International Ski Federation (FIS). In recent years, the circuit has been prepared both to ensure the safety of the skiers as well as to make it as spectacular as possible.

It is 2.7 km long, 60 metres wide and has a 756-metre height difference where skiers can reach speeds in excess of 120 km/h.

The course ends in the town of El Tarter, so fans can even get close to the finishing line on foot to enjoy the competition.

SOLDEU PLATFORM

In August 2017, a landmark project to improve the base of the Avet slope, as well as the accesses to the entry point of Grandvalira’s Soldeu sector, was begun. Construction commenced on a 16,000 m2 ski platform that will soar over the Valira d’Orient River and underground car park for 450 vehicles at the base of the Avet slope in Grandvalira’s Soldeu sector. It is a €25-million investment that will be shouldered by the company that manages Soldeu-El Tarter (ENSISA) in its entirety.

A project involving great technical complexity, it will mark a turning point in this iconic sector. Its implementation received a favourable report from the Department of Environment and Sustainability of the Government of Andorra. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted by ENSISA includes the entire ski platform project and covers all areas: floral inventory, accesses to the works perimeter, respect for the river channels, wastewater management, protection of water habitats, etc. An overall landscaping project is also being considered.

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
  1. Access to the Soldeu walkway in 1966.
  2. Widening of the Soldeu bridge, in 1998 to the present time.
  3. New base in the Soldeu sector, Winter 2018-19.

RENOVATION PROJECT OF THE BASE IN SOLDEU:

The construction of the platform meets 3 objectives:
  • Prepare the arrival of the Avet slope as the venue for the 2019 Alpine Skiing World Cup finals to enhance the potential for tourism and international prestige.
  • Provide Soldeu with an area comparable to that of may Alpine ski resorts, bringing the town closer to the snow.
  • Solve a long-running shortage of parking by providing underground parking with room for 450 vehicles.

A WORLD-CLASS BASE

This new infrastructure will symbolise the drive for constant innovation, enabling to position the ski resort at the top international level and show the best Andorra and its snow industry have to offer.

MERCHANDISING

If you always go with style wherever you go, head to the shops in Grandvalira sectors Soldeu, El Tarter and Canillo to gear up with the exclusive merchandising of the World Cup Finals.

Ski Race Soldeu

Feel like a professional skier, participate in virtual championships and win prizes in the first online game of the Alpine Ski World Cup Finals for your mobile device or tablet.

The Grandvalira ski resort in Andorra presents the first online Alpine skiing game for your mobile device or tablet, inspired by the Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals being held from 11 to 17 March 2019 at Grandvalira. It can be downloaded for free on Google Play or in the Apple Store.

Experience what it feels like to be a World Cup skier and race against the clock with other players from around the world. The best times will win prizes at the upcoming championships organised by Grandvalira Soldeu-El Tarter, all with the SKI RACE SOLDEU online game and you as the star.

Experience with your own hands what it feels like to descend the exact World Cup Àliga Downhill Slope, located in the El Tarter section. Find the quickest route, trying not to skip any gates, and cross the finish line in the fastest time possible, then try again as many times as you like: you are your own biggest rival.

Good luck!
